SOTW: Chapter One

The first part of chapter one was about nomads. We read the chapter, then made some game bags and headed outside to hunt and gather. The game bags were a bit of an issue - nothing I came up with looked "animal skin" enough. We finally settled on butcher paper stapled into a bag - it looked kind of deer skinish. Seth and Maddy really enjoyed gathering leaves, and their bags were soon full. They looked around for a good tent spot, as well. Unfortunately, it was a VERY cold August day so we didn't last very long outside.

We came inside and continued the fun. I hid some berry candies around the room, and they gathered away.

Big News

We have some big news to share!!

We are all pretty excited (although Kiera doesn't really understand!)
Seth is REALLY hoping for a brother ... and he would like to name him Dash or Dasher. Maddy is hoping for a sister, and wants to name her Clarabelle.

The newest member of our family is due to arrive on February 17th ... (read: February 27th ;) ). I am officially in my second trimester, and am starting to get my energy back - yay!

Time for a Haircut!

Seth is in desperate need of a haircut ... and has been for a while :) He has been begging to have his hair shaved like Uncle Will for a while - but I'm refusing. However, a trim of some sort is definitely needed ... See?

He actually really enjoyed his ponytails. He like to feel the ends of them - they felt sort of prickley.

Story of the World: Introduction

We have started school! We are doing a little Story of the World through August - just to get a bid of a head start. There is also lots of outdoorsy fun in the first few chapters, so I wanted to make sure that we covered them when the weather was nice. We did Chapter 0 last week. The first part covered the definition of history and how to find out about your past ... we spent lots of time looking through photo albums and examining our own histories. The second part of the chapter covered archeology. I set up a miniature archeology site and Seth and Maddy got to work.

 Discovering artifacts.
(Excuse the mess behind the kiddos ... we are in the middle of kitchen renos. Our old cupboards are still being "stored" on our porch / deck. Can't WAIT until it's gone!)

 Recording their information:

They both LOVED the activity. We now have two children with plans to become archeologists when they are older. Of course, Seth is hoping to combine this job with that of a paleontologist - sounds like a lot of digging!! A museum nearby is currently hosting an Egyptian exhibit. The craft this week is Jr. Archeologist - I'm hoping we can make it there some time this week!

Now on to Chapter one ....

Sisterly Love

Kiera has been very attached to big sister Maddy lately. It's pretty sweet to watch. During TV time she always wants to sit on Maddy's lap ... Maddy is not too crazy about this since it makes it difficult to see :) Kiera has settled for a "cuddo" (cuddle):

Kiera and I headed to IKEA one day a few weeks ago. I dropped Seth and Maddy off at Aunt Katie's - and Kiera cried for Maddy all the way to the 401. When she wakes up in the morning, she first asks for Daee, then Maee (then Set). I just love watching the bond between sisters form - I'm hoping for lots of sisterly giggles and playing in the future!

Wii Fit

When garage sale-ing in Caledonia this spring, I picked up Wii Fit for Kids. All three kids love it.

Kiera tries very hard to mimic the characters on screen (or her brother / sister).

A Visit to Grandma's

I mentioned in an earlier post that Seth and Maddy had the opportunity to have a sleep over at grandma and grandpa's. By all accounts, it was a lot of fun :) [Although my mom did say they were awfully busy!] I keep hearing random tidbits about things that happened during their visit. A few highlights included: biking, visiting the park (twice!), visiting Curious George (and eating cake/candy and colouring masks), and baking teddy bear cookies:

(They were nice enough to bring one home for their baby sister!)

Of course, no one in our family can go through an entire meal / snack with pulling silly faces:

I'm so glad they had the opportunity to visit with my parents for the night - the bond between grandchild / grandparent is a special one!

Pony Tails!

We finally got some pony tails in Kiera's hair. It makes her look so much older :)

A Heavy Load

Our horse

This is our little horse:

I thought it looked painful, she insisted it wasn't. I was a little worried her nose might end up permanently squished :)

Camping 2014

For the past five (?) years Greg's side of the family has comped together at a nearby campground. We always reserve the same site - a large group site that enables us to set up our many trailers in a nice circle. There is lots of room, a pool nearby, a baseball diamond and field behind us, and a playground within a short walking distance. We joined the family this year for the whole week. The men always go to work during the day, joining their family in the evening, and I have not yet been brave enough to tackle camping with children on my own for long. But this year, since my kitchen was in shambles, it seemed just as easy to be on a campsite as at home.
So, how did it go? Overall, it was lots of fun.
Kiera loved having so many people around - there was always someone for her to follow /play with. Her cousins were pretty good with her, too. She was taken to the park by a few of them more than once ... and she loves parks! She also hooked up with a young cousin close to her age - they had great fun together. Ironically, Kailey shares a similar temperament to Kiera - which made for some cute battles of will :D Kiera also loved having so many food options. Once we were done a meal, she would move from picnic table to picnic table checking out the food, and scrounging whatever she could. She was also always ready to accept a snack! Unfortunately, Kiera wasn't great at night. She had a hard time falling asleep (although once she did fall asleep she was great through the night).
Maddy was quite the opposite of Kiera. Having so many people around is not a bonus for her at all. She spent much of her time hanging around (on) me. The first two days (Saturday / Sunday) she was a little brave and played with a few girls her age ... but that all changed Sunday evening. Sunday evening is (and perhaps forever will be?) etched in Maddy's memory ... possibly as the worst evening of her life :-p. Sunday evening started with after - church cake. It wasn't getting eaten, so Shania asked if she could do a face plant in it. She did, and so began a "cake fight" ... a very tame one, involving Shania, her dad (Uncle Bob) and one or two other people. Well, all Maddy remembers is Uncle Bob chasing someone and putting cake on their face. She has been having Uncle Bob nightmares ever since ... she wakes up crying because she is so scared of Uncle Bob. The other night she woke up happy - she had had a dream that Uncle Bob was locked behind a gate :-p. This incident also made her nervous to leave my side ... what if Uncle Bob came after her with cake??
She was happy to go home at the end of the week.
Seth loved camping. There are two other boys his age, and they got along so well! They hung out all day, every day (and most of the night too!). He was also thrilled to have so many soccer-loving older cousins around. He played many a game, even though he was shortest by far. He also joined them in front of the lap top, watching FIFA. He was more than thrilled to find out we were staying the full week :)

Me ... I enjoyed myself. Lots of sitting around, chatting :) Campfires are always fun too!

Anyways, although we were there for a full week I took VERY few pictures. The girls loved the bike strollers, and lots of fun was had in them:

On the last day we were there, some of the cousins set up a treasure hunt for the little kids. The end "treasure" was a pinata ... lots of candy for everyone! After that, there was an obstacle course for the older kids. Seth was lucky - he was considered a young kid and an old kid :D It was a pretty tricky obstacle course, and, in true Seth fashion, everything he did had to be executed perfectly (no short cuts at all!!). It was cute watching all the kids racing:

That was the end of a fun week (for most of us)!

Moothie!

Kiera LOVES smoothies (moothies). She is, however, rather messy when she drinks them :)
